A Spirit Airlines flight was hit by small arms fire while on final approach to Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince on Monday, according to an announcement by Haiti’s National Office of Civil Aviation.
The incident reportedly took place as Flight 951 was descending over Clercin, a district in the capital region known for being a hotspot of gang violence.
The aircraft subsequently diverted to the Dominican Republic, where it arrived safely at Cibao International Airport. One cabin crew member was treated for minor injuries after being grazed by projectile fragments.
Photos taken of the Fort Lauderdale-based Airbus A320 after it touched down revealed bullet holes on the outer fuselage and damage to the interior.
Spirit Airlines' corporate offices promptly suspended all operations to the island nation, a move that was soon followed by American Airlines, JetBlue, and Sunrise Airways.
On October 24, a United Nations helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing at the same location after it also drew civilian gunfire.
