On Monday, a court in India began the trial of a former police volunteer charged with raping and murdering a trainee doctor at the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The suspect, Sanjay Roy, was arrested shortly after coworkers discovered the body of the female victim on August 9 in an unoccupied seminar room at the public healthcare facility. The deceased had purportedly gone there to rest following a long work shift.
An autopsy determined that the 31-year-old second-year student endured battery, sexual penetration, and strangulation, resulting in injuries to her eyes, face, hand, leg, neck, and genital areas.
The tragic incident sparked nationwide protests across the South Asian nation, along with organized strikes by the Indian Medical Association, highlighting growing concerns over the safety of healthcare professionals in the country’s overcrowded and underfunded government-run hospitals.
The defendant has denied all the allegations against him.
