The United States Federal Aviation Administration announced the suspension of all commercial flights to Haiti on Wednesday, after reports emerged that several passenger aircraft had been struck by small arms fire while maneuvering near Toussaint Louverture International Airport.
The 30-day restriction also prohibits flight operations below 10,000 feet when traversing the island nation’s territory.
The measure follows Monday’s diversion of a Spirit Airlines Airbus A320 to the Dominican Republic after the pilot reported that a number of bullets had breached the plane’s fuselage while on a final approach to the capital city of Port-au-Prince. One cabin crew member was treated for minor injuries caused by projectile fragments entering the main compartment.
On Tuesday, representatives from American Airlines and JetBlue confirmed firearms damage was found on two of their planes after they departed Port-au-Prince the previous day.
