A synagogue in suburban Montreal was the target of a firebombing early Wednesday, marking the second incident of arson on the house of worship in just 13 months.
Law enforcement authorities said they were notified of a working structure fire at Congregation Beth Tikvah in Dollard-des-Ormeaux shortly before 3 a.m. local time.
Firefighters who responded to the alarm quickly contained the flames and discovered remnants of an incendiary device inside the building. Fortunately, no injuries occurred, and the damage to the property was minimal.
Police at the scene observed a shattered window and a compromised door at a nearby office belonging to Federation CJA, a leading local Jewish organization. An investigation was initiated to determine if the vandalism was connected to the morning’s events.
In November 2023, both locations were set ablaze by unknown arsonists.
“This vile antisemitic attack against Montreal’s Jewish community is cowardly and criminal,” Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement on X.
