Guatemala has expressed its readiness to accept Central American nationals deported from the United States, according to a report by Reuters.
Three sources told the news outlet that authorities in Guatemala City are looking to maintain good relations with the incoming U.S. presidential administration, following Donald Trump’s campaign promise to accelerate the expulsion of illegal immigrants from America’s borders.
"There has to be a regional response," an anonymous Guatemalan official stated. "And we want to be part of the solution."
Washington has faced challenges in the past when attempting to remove individuals from countries with adversarial relations, such as Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. Earlier this month, Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed she would only repatriate her own citizens.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security estimates that at least 11 million undocumented migrants reside within its territory.
