A senior official in Belgium condemned a proposal to send a bus convoy of migrants to Brussels in response to a fine imposed on Hungary for failing to comply with European Union asylum laws.
Nicole de Moor, Belgium’s migration minister, said Monday that Budapest’s threat “undermines solidarity and cooperation within the Union” and would be “a flagrant violation of European and international agreements,” before declaring that such individuals would be denied admission to her country.
The Hungarian government, led by conservative Viktor Orbán, indicated Friday that the measure was intended to convince E.U. administrators to stop penalizing the Eastern European nation for its restrictive immigration policies and unwillingness to participate in the decade-long migrant crisis affecting the continent.
In June, the European Court of Justice fined Hungary €200 million for ignoring the political bloc’s asylum regulations and levied an additional €1 million per day penalty until they come into compliance.
