The lawyer for the Iranian dissident rapper, Toomaj Salehi, told the Sharq newspaper on Wednesday that his client has been sentenced to death for charges related to his support of last year’s nationwide protests.

Salehi, who has been in custody since October for a conviction of “corruption on earth,” was found guilty by the Isfahan Revolutionary Court of armed rebellion, assembly and collusion, inciting riots, and propaganda against the state.

The sentence reportedly contradicts a ruling from the Islamic Republic’s Supreme Court that classified Salehi’s case as one that would qualify for amnesty.

"Branch One of the Revolutionary Court of Isfahan in an unprecedented move, did not enforce the Supreme Court's ruling and sentenced Salehi to the harshest punishment," his lawyer, Amir Raisian, said of the decision.

"We will definitely appeal this sentence," he added.

The demonstrations, caused by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while she was in police custody for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly, were strongly promoted by the hip-hop artist.
