Egypt’s President, Abdel Fattah El-Sissi, traveled to Turkey on Wednesday for the first official visit of a head of state from the North African country in 12 years.

The meeting is anticipated to formalize a thaw in relations between the two countries, which had deteriorated following the ousting of Turkish ally and Muslim Brotherhood-backed Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in a 2013 coup led by El-Sissi.

El-Sissi’s excursion follows a February trip to Cairo by Turkish President Recep Erdogan, where the two leaders publicly agreed to call upon Israel to stop its military operations in Gaza.

Turkish media reported that participating ministers signed 18 joint agreements of cooperation on agriculture, culture, defense, education, energy, finance, health, tourism, and transportation.

In November 2022, both individuals were seen shaking hands at the World Cup in Qatar.
