Hungary Criticizes White House Decision Permitting Ukraine to Strike Deeper into Russia

On Monday, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó sharply criticized the Biden administration's decision this week to permit the Ukrainian military to use advanced U.S. munitions for strikes deeper into Russia.

“The pro-war mainstream has launched a final, desperate attack on the new reality,” the minister said in a Facebook post. “In their final desperation, these pro-war forces do not even seem to shy away from the worst: expanding the war in Ukraine to a global scale.”

“The hawkish politicians ousted from power refuse to take note of the will of the people. This is not only undemocratic but also extremely dangerous,” he added, possibly referencing the recent U.S. elections.

The White House announced on Sunday that Kiev would be allowed to deploy its U.S.-supplied long-range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to neutralize targets beyond Russian-controlled areas within its borders. This shift in policy comes after numerous requests from Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, who has been advocating for such approval in response to mounting territorial losses in recent months.

Szijjártó’s remarks reflect ongoing concerns from his government about the conflict in Ukraine, with Budapest often regarded as the European Union and NATO member closest to Moscow. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has previously opposed Western defense aid to the embattled country and advocated for an end to the hostilities.
