Popular Iraqi social media influencer Ghufran Mahdi Sawadi was shot to death outside of her Baghdad home on Friday evening.
Security camera footage of the crime scene showed the assailant, who arrived on a motorcycle, discharge a handgun four times while the victim was sitting in her car.
Iraq’s interior ministry has stated that they are investigating the incident.
Sawadi, who goes by Um Fahad on her TikTok and Instagram accounts, frequently showed herself dancing in revealing clothing to her 460,000 followers.
The 30-year-old was sentenced in 2023 to six months in prison for “violating public decency and morals” because of some of the content that she published.
The altercation follows efforts by the Iraqi government to censor online content that it determines to be in contrast with the country’s “morals and traditions.”
