South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has been banned from leaving the country following widespread backlash against his martial law declaration last week.

Oh Dong-woon, the head of the nation’s Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, informed a parliamentary committee on Monday that he implemented the restriction while investigating potential criminal responsibility Yoon may face due to his contentious Tuesday order.

Although Yoon managed to avoid a formal impeachment vote on Saturday, Han Dong-hoon, the leader of the president’s political party, suggested afterward that the 63-year-old would soon step down, describing his actions as “a clear and serious violation of the law." Han designated Prime Minister Han Duck-soo to manage state affairs in the interim.

Accusing the opposition Democratic Party of engaging in “anti-state activities” and working with "North Korean communists," Yoon directed the military to impose a six-hour limitation on protests, media coverage, and political events, lasting until early Wednesday.
