U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters during an unannounced visit to Kiev that the Biden administration is still working on ways to provide the embattled nation with additional military aid. The visit was the White House official’s first trip to the country in 13 months.

When asked during a press briefing about the status of a $60 billion assistance package that is currently stalled in the House of Representatives, Sullivan responded by saying, "From our perspective we are confident we will get this done. We will get this aid to Ukraine."

Last month, the Senate approved a supplemental bill for the Ukrainian armed forces, but House Speaker Mike Johnson has said that resistance from some Republicans has hindered its passage in the lower chamber. Recent suggestions to categorize the appropriation as a loan has created more support for the legislation.

U.S. taxpayers have already sent $75 billion dollars to support the war effort, making the country the largest recipient of American foreign aid.

In early February, the European Union agreed on an additional $54 billion dollar package for Kiev.

Sullivan’s comments come as Russia is making advances on the battlefield, while Ukraine is suffering from shortages of weapons, materials, and able-bodied soldiers.
