The Ukrainian armed forces fired a barrage of British Storm Shadow air-to-surface missiles into Russia for the first time on Wednesday, following the previous day's inaugural cross-border strike with U.S.-provided ATACMS projectiles.
The long-range weapons reportedly targeted military positions in Russia's Kursk region, an area that Kiev has partially occupied after a surprise counter-maneuver in August.
Defense officials in London declined to comment on the incident, but videos posted on social media showed several of the advanced munitions detonating in the Russian village of Marino, which is home to one of the Kremlin’s key command headquarters.
There was no response from authorities in Moscow after the explosions, but the incursion comes in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s repeated threats to consider countries supplying materials used for attacks within his nation’s territory as engaging in acts of war.
