Protesters reportedly attempted to breach the Israeli embassy in Amman, Jordan, amid an ongoing conflict between Israel and the terrorist group Hamas, based in the Gaza Strip.
Video footage shows demonstrators outside the complex and a chaotic scene replete with smoke, blaring sirens, and irate demonstrators carrying Palestinian flags. Conflicting accounts of events have emerged and it is unclear whether the demonstrators sought to burn down the complex, breach it, or accomplish some other end. The Israeli embassy in Jordan's latest post on X announced a new profile picture earlier on Tuesday and staff at the facility do not appear to have issued any statement.
The disruption comes as President Joe Biden is slated to visit the city for a summit with Jordanian King Abdullah II and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi on the Israel-Hamas conflict. It remains unclear whether the events at the Israeli embassy will impact the meeting.
The episode comes amid ongoing outcry surrounding the destruction of the Al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital in Gaza City, resulting in at least 500 dead, according to the Gazan Health Ministry. Hamas officials have blamed an Israeli airstrike while the Israel Defense Forces have denied involvement. Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas pulled out of the planned Amman summit to protest the hospital's destruction.
Israel has maintained a bombardment of Gaza for more than a week in retaliation for a major Hamas raid on its territory. Fighting is ongoing and the conflict threatens to evolve into a wider war, with cross-border strikes reaching Lebanon and Syria.
