U.S. House votes to extend Iran Sanctions Act for another 10 years

The House has passed a bill which will extend sanctions against Iran for another decade. With overwhelming support from both Democrats and Republicans, lawmakers Tuesday voted for an extension of the Iran Sanctions Act, ISA, for another 10 years. The ISA targets economic punitive measures against Iran’s energy, banking and defense sectors, in an effort to curb the country’s nuclear and missile capabilities. The push to extend sanctions against Iran’s regime, which continues its global support of terror, is based on the country’s upholding of the nuclear deal. The U.S. and its Western allies had agreed last year upon the signing of the nuclear agreement to gradually lift certain sanctions, but lawmakers now see it imperative to keep pressure on Iran with a “snap back” option should Tehran violate its promises. Sanctions legislation against Iran was set to expire at the end of the year.
