Former President Donald Trump received a briefing by U.S. intelligence officials on Tuesday concerning the possibility that the regime in Iran is planning to murder the 78-year-old Republican nominee.
“President Trump was briefed earlier today by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence regarding real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an effort to destabilize and sow chaos in the United States,” Steven Cheung, the ex-president’s campaign spokesperson, said in a statement while claiming “these continued and coordinated attacks have heightened in the past few months.”
Following the session, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, warning there were "big threats" on his life and he feared Tehran "will try again."
The meeting took place after Trump's personal security detail was heightened in July amid reports that Asif Raza Merchant, a Pakistani national with suspected connections to the Islamic Republic, was allegedly plotting to assassinate several U.S. public figures, including the former president.
Last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation revealed that agents of the theocracy sought to disseminate sensitive campaign materials, obtained through a June "spear phishing" attack against Roger Stone, a longtime associate of Trump, to liberal media outlets and his political rivals.
Tehran has also been incriminated in an online disinformation campaign to discredit Trump’s election endeavors, presumably in support of Vice President Kamala Harris.
Federal authorities are also looking into two recent attempts on Trump's life, although preliminary evidence suggests these incidents were initiated domestically.
