Labor Party officials in the United Kingdom promised on Thursday to recognize a Palestinian state if they win the upcoming July 4 elections.

"We are committed to recognizing a Palestinian state as a contribution to a renewed peace process which results in a two-state solution with a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state," the socialist organization said while unveiling a list of policies that they would implement when leading the government.

The majority Conservative faction, which is trailing in the polls, announced the possibility of taking similar measures in February, when Foreign Secretary David Cameron told Lebanese broadcaster LBCI that his country may not wait until a negotiated peace settlement is finalized to endorse sovereignty for the Palestinians.

In May, Ireland, Norway, and Spain joined Sweden as the only Western European nations to formally recognize this existence, and last week, Slovenia became the 12th European Union member to do so.
