A failed asylum seeker from Syria was detained by German authorities on Sunday for allegedly murdering three people and wounding eight at an event celebrating the 650th anniversary of the city of Solingen.
Federal prosecutors contend that the 26-year-old unnamed suspect was motivated by an allegiance to the Islamic State when he stabbed at least eleven attendees of Saturday’s ‘Festival of Diversity’ organized by the municipality.
In a statement on Telegram shortly after the incident, an ISIS spokesperson claimed credit for the bloodbath, describing the perpetrator as a "soldier of the Islamic State" who committed his actions to “avenge Muslims in Palestine and everywhere.”
The altercation comes after a similar occurrence in June, when a 25-year-old Afghan migrant residing in the country illegally was arrested for killing a police officer and injuring five protesters in a knife attack at an anti-Islam demonstration in Mannheim.
