Seven Israeli nationals were indicted at the Haifa District Court on Friday for allegedly receiving at least $300,000 in cash and cryptocurrency from the Islamic Republic to carry out more than 600 acts of espionage targeting the Jewish state.

In a 20-page legal filing, prosecutors stated 43-year-old Azis Nisanov ran a spy ring, supplying his two handlers in Tehran with photographs and information about air defense batteries, military installations, ports in Cyprus and Israel, the Hadera power plant, and sports venues.

One surveillance request reportedly involved the dining hall at a Golani Brigade training base in Binyamina, which was struck by a Hezbollah drone during dinner service on October 13, resulting in the deaths of four soldiers and injuries to over 60 others.

Several of the accused are also charged with monitoring a University of Haifa engineering researcher with the possible intent of causing harm to the unnamed individual.

The seven residents of Haifa and Krayot, which include two minors and an AWOL IDF soldier, will stand trial for aiding an enemy during wartime, one of the few offenses in Israel that carries a possible death sentence.

The defendants, arrested in September, have been characterized by intelligence officials as Jewish immigrants from Azerbaijan who carried out their operations for financial gain.

“This is one of the most severe cases of security offenses that have been uncovered in the State of Israel and which was carried out by Israeli citizens who knew well that they were acting against the country’s security and for Iran, at a time when Israel was engaged in a tough war on several fronts,” a Justice Ministry spokesperson said in a statement on the incident.
