Three Baltic-based Russian warships arrived in Havana on Saturday, the second time Moscow has sent naval assets to the island nation this summer.

The flotilla, which includes a frigate, a training ship, and a refueling tanker, remains docked at a tourist berth and is scheduled to depart for an undisclosed destination on July 30.

The visit, announced earlier this week, is described by Cuban defense officials as a “historical practice” and an exercise of “friendship and collaboration” between the long-time allies.

The deployment comes as the Kremlin has been increasing its diplomatic and economic relations with friendly countries in the region amid international sanctions and continued support by Western nations for Ukraine as they fight against Russia’s 2022 invasion.
