The French national soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Nations League tournament after a scoreless draw against Israel in Paris on Thursday.
The match was held under heightened security following last week’s antisemitic attacks in Amsterdam, which targeted Jewish supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv after a Europa League contest.
Attempting to avoid a repeat of the violence in the Dutch capital, Parisian authorities stationed 4,000 police officers in and around the event location and at many of the city’s public transportation stations.
Only one physical incident was reported, involving a brief scuffle between approximately 50 spectators when a group clashed with Israeli fans near the game’s 10-minute mark. The altercation was swiftly managed by stadium staff.
On several occasions, Israeli players received jeering during the game.
Some of the buses carrying supporters of the Jewish state arrived at the Stade de France under police escort, after warnings from officials in Jerusalem advised their citizens to avoid attending the activities due to safety concerns.
The 80,000-seat venue had a confirmed attendance of only 16,611, suggesting that many individuals chose to avoid showing up to the potentially dangerous situation.
