The United States is providing Ukraine with an additional $725 million in military aid to support the war-torn nation in safeguarding its borders against continued Russian progress in its eastern regions. This allocation is the largest since Congress approved a $61 billion funding package in April.
The materials will include antipersonnel mines, antitank projectiles, counter-drone systems, demolition equipment, High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems munitions, Stinger missiles, small arms, unmanned aerial vehicles, 105mm and 155mm artillery shells, and related ancillary instruments.
The resources will be distributed using presidential ‘drawdown’ authority, a process that allows for the products to be issued from existing Pentagon holdings to avoid prolonging the time defense contractors may require to manufacture and deliver the armaments.
This shipment marks the first time the Ukrainian armed forces will receive landmines, a move that has drawn criticism from advocacy organizations concerned about potential risks to civilians in the areas where these devices will be used.
