The Algeria Olympic boxer competing in the women's division and at the center of a gender issue will compete Friday for a gold medal.

The welterweight boxer, Imane Khelfi, advanced to the gold-medal round in the Paris Olympics with a victory Monday night over Thailand's Janjaem Suwannapheng. She will face Yang Liu of China in the final round.

The controversy stems from the Olympic-banished International Boxing Association’s decision to disqualify Khelfi and fellow Paris medalist Lin Yu-ting of Chinese Taipei from the world championships last year for allegedly failing an eligibility test, according to the Associated Press.
