An American trucker convoy, modeled after Canada’s “Freedom Convoy,” reportedly plans to shut down the Capital Beltway in Washington D.C. later this week protesting several issues including vaccine mandates, immigration, and fuel prices.
Bob Bolus, who own a towing business and truck parts in Pennsylvania, told FOX5 DC that he heard that hundreds of people were interested in shutting down the Beltway, creating a “giant boa constrictor…that basically squeezes you, chokes you, and it swallows you…that’s what we’re going to do to D.C.”
“We will not compromise anybody’s safety or health,” Bolus said, adding that a lane will be left open for emergency vehicles.
However, in regard to D.C. commuters, he gave no sympathy, saying “as far as if they can’t get to work, geez that’s too bad.”
Fox News reports that D.C. police have already limited time off for officers and put nearly 500 officers on civil disturbance beginning on Wednesday in response to the plans to shut down the Capital Beltway. Law enforcement in the D.C. area told Fox News that they are aware of the protest and are communicating with local, state, and federal partners.
This American caravan is modeled after Canada’s demonstration involving truckers, which was dubbed the “Freedom Convoy.”
The Canadian protest shut down Ottawa, Canada, in protest of COVID-19 and vaccine mandates. The protest was recently shut down by Canadian authorities.
According to reports, 191 people were arrested and 389 charges were filed, while 99 vehicles had been towed.
