Egypt Holding Post War Governance Meetings with Fatah and Hamas: Reports

Representatives from the Palestinian Fatah and Hamas factions have been meeting in Cairo to address Gaza’s postwar governance, according to a Saturday report by Egypt’s Al Qahera News.

When asked for comment, a source close to the negotiations informed Reuters that members of the Palestinian Authority met with Hamas officials last month, following Egyptian initiatives to form a committee to oversee the future administration of the coastal enclave. The talks were later adjourned for further consideration.

The individual claimed the proposal would involve participants unaffiliated with any Palestinian movement, likely due to concerns Israel would strongly oppose including associates connected to Hamas.

Efforts at reconciliation between the two groups have largely been unsuccessful since Hamas violently ousted the PA from Gaza after a power-sharing struggle following the 2006 Palestinian legislative election.
