On Sunday, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry announced its forces were on heightened alert after radar systems detected large missile tests conducted in several Chinese provinces the previous day.

Officials said in a statement that the weekend launches were reported in Gansu and Qinghai provinces, Inner Mongolia, and the western Xinjiang region.

The extensive drills were described by Taiwanese military authorities as "multiple waves of firing" organized by the communist country’s Army and Rocket Force.

The exercises follow the Wednesday test firing by Beijing of an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean.

Also on Sunday, Taiwan identified nine Chinese combat aircraft, and four naval vessels operating in the island nation's Air Defense Identification Zone, prompting close monitoring.
