Law enforcement officials in Paris are preparing to deploy 4,000 police officers around the Stade de France and across public transportation for Thursday’s UEFA Nations League match between the French and Israeli national soccer teams.
“There will be an anti-terrorist security perimeter around the stadium,” the city’s police chief, Laurent Nuñez, told the news broadcaster BFM TV, while also noting risk protocols will be "reinforced."
The increased protective measures follow incidents of organized violence by local Muslim residents targeting Jewish supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv after a 5-0 loss to AFC Ajax in a Europa League competition last week in Amsterdam.
At least 10 Maccabi spectators were reported injured in the altercations, prompting authorities in Jerusalem to dispatch two commercial aircraft to evacuate the distressed citizens from the Netherlands.
On Sunday, Israel’s National Security Council issued a travel advisory, urging its nationals to avoid the event for safety reasons and to refrain from actions that might reveal their Jewish identity while overseas.
French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to be in attendance for the game.
