Air raid sirens were activated around central Israel on Monday after a ballistic missile was fired at the Jewish state by Islamic Republic-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
Israeli military officials said the projectile was successfully intercepted outside of the nation’s borders, describing the warning alarms as necessary to caution civilians of possible falling shrapnel from the defensive maneuvers.
The Magen David Adom ambulance service said five people were slightly injured during the incident while rushing to bomb shelters in areas deemed potential targets.
As a safety precaution, flights at Ben-Gurion International Airport were reported to have been briefly suspended during the incursion.
Earlier in the day, a drone launched by the Yemeni militants was destroyed by one of Israel’s naval vessels while the lingering munition operated over the Mediterranean.
