German authorities announced Sunday that they have arrested a Libyan national for allegedly planning a firearms attack on the Israeli Embassy in Berlin.
The prosecutor's office stated the suspect was arrested on Saturday in the capital suburb of Bernau and is also accused of communicating online with a member of the Islamic State.
Anti-terrorism agents reportedly conducted searches of the individual's residence and another person's home following information received from an unnamed foreign intelligence service.
Israel’s Ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, released a statement thanking the country's law enforcement agencies “for ensuring the security of our embassy.”
In September, an Austrian citizen with reputed ties to al Qaeda was shot by German police officers after he attempted a similar incursion outside of the Israeli consulate in Munich.
