A report published on Monday revealed that in the past six months, Russian cargo ships have transported more than 300,000 artillery shells and one million rounds of ammunition from Iran via the Caspian Sea. The Wall Street Journal obtained access to documents and spoke with officials who confirmed that Tehran has been assisting Moscow in resupplying its troops involved in the conflict in Ukraine, despite opposition from the United States and other allies of Kiev.
According to the report, the amount of aid provided by Tehran to Moscow has been increasing, and the latest shipment of ammunition and weapons left Iran in early March. Sources stated that the Russian cargo ship Rasul Gamzatov carried approximately two thousand artillery shells during this trip. After unloading its cargo in the port of Astrakhan, the ship returned to Iran before making another journey to Russia at the end of March.
According to the WSJ, American officials have stated this method of transport poses a challenge for intervention due to its difficulty to prevent. As per the WSJ, any attempt to obstruct shipments in the Caspian Sea would necessitate the assistance of other nations that share borders with the sea.
In November of 2022, Iran and Russia entered into a deal that permitted Moscow to produce kamikaze drones, which were originally designed by Iran, on Russian territory. As part of the agreement, Tehran transferred the design and crucial components of the drones to Moscow, enabling the manufacturing process.
