In a recent report from Russia's Tass news agency, it has been revealed that Sergei Naryshkin, the head of Russian foreign intelligence, engaged in a phone conversation with his counterpart at the CIA, where they discussed the mutiny conducted by the Russian Wagner Group, as well as “what to do with Ukraine.”
According to the report, Naryshkin stated that CIA Director Bill Burns brought up "the events of 24 June," but the majority of the call was focused on deliberating the course of action regarding Ukraine.
In separate articles published on June 30 by The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, it was reported that Burns had called Naryshkin to assure the Russian government that the United States played no part in the Wagner Group's revolt.
Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia in February 2022, has consistently emphasized that it should be the sole entity responsible for determining its future, and the United States has reiterated its support for this policy.
The United States denied any secret peace negotiations with Russia after CIA Director Burns had a 2022 face-to-face meeting with Naryshkin in Turkey.
The CIA has chosen not to comment on Naryshkin's statements.
