Iranian police have charged two female actors, Katayoun Riahi and Panthea Bahram, for appearing in public without wearing the mandatory head covering, commonly known as the hijab. According to a statement by the Tehran police on April 24, the two actresses are accused of violating the law by "removing hijab in public and publishing pictures on the internet."

The two actresses are part of a growing group of artists who have faced sanctions, travel bans, and detention for challenging mandatory hijab rules and advocating for more social freedoms.

Since the arrest related death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September, a growing number of women have appeared in public in Iran without wearing the hijab. Amini had been arrested for allegedly wearing her headscarf improperly.

As a result of the 1979 revolution in Iran, all women are required to cover their heads and wear loose fitting clothing while in public.
